Kelsey Rae, Steve Linder and Larry Parish bring kids (and those who are young at heart) a few interesting recycling facts in this week’s edition of the Vocal Trash Street Show.
Did you know…
The recycle symbol was created by a guy named Gary Dean Anderson in 1970?
The symbol for recycling has become one of the most recognizable icons in the world. Gary beat out 500 other contestants in the Container Corporation of America’s recycling design competition.
The first municipal dump was established in Ancient Athens in 400 BC?
We sometimes think of waste management as a modern phenomenon, but an edict was issued in Ancient Athens prohibiting citizens from throwing garbage into the streets. Instead, trash had to be carried at least a mile from the city walls. By 200 AD, the Romans had their own garbage men who walked through the streets and collected waste in their wagon. It wasn’t until 1388 that England banned waste disposal in public waterways. Virginia colonists buried their trash in 1710, but other parts of Colonial America were still dumping their trash in the streets until the mid-1800s.

Why Should You Care About Going Green?
The reason Vocal Trash is so passionate about waste management and trash reuse is that our planet is rapidly being destroyed by improper waste disposal that can be prevented with better awareness. This environmental issue is a great contributor to global warming, air and water pollution, not to mention overflowing garbage dumps. The sustainability of our planet is our responsibility to share, for us all.
You can help do your part when you
